Introduction
At the National Audit Office (NAO), we’re the UK’s independent public spending watchdog. We support Parliament in holding government to account and help improve public services through high-quality audits. Following the recent launch of our NAO Strategy and our People Deal, we’re looking for an experienced and passionate Internal Communications Manager to play a vital role in supporting our ambitious plans and deliver communications that involved, inform and inspire our people.
Why this role matters
Reporting to the Head of Internal Communications, you will lead on internal communications across a number of key areas at the NAO and have a role in leading on some operational aspect of the wider internal comms. You’ll lead on communications for our people agenda— across HR, Learning and Development, and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) teams—ensuring our messages are clear, engaging and aligned with our strategic priorities. You’ll also help drive culture, connection, and colleague engagement across a hybrid workforce.

Responsibilities | Key responsibilities
Act as a trusted communications business partner to key teams, including HR, strategy, transformation, digital services and facilities.
Design and deliver multi-channel communication strategies and campaigns, with a strong focus on storytelling and staff engagement.
Create and manage content for our internal digital channels (including intranet and Viva Engage).
Support key internal events such as all-staff conferences and leadership sessions.
Evaluate impact, manage risks, and shape messaging for sensitive or high-profile projects.
Play an active role in our communications management team, coaching colleagues and contributing to continuous improvement.
Deputise for the Head of Internal Communications where needed and lead internal comms improvement projects. |

Demonstrable success in delivering internal communication strategies and campaigns
Strong verbal and written communication, with a flair for plain English and engaging content
Excellent stakeholder and relationship management skills
Ability to evaluate comms impact and make data-informed improvements
Proactive, innovative, and able to manage multiple priorities at pace
Confident advising senior colleagues and working with sensitive material
Desirable:
Knowledge of the public sector or NAO’s remit
Experience with SharePoint, Viva Engage, and digital content tools
Skills in video and visual content creation |
